You’ve probably got shows covered – and if not you’ve seen every suggestion on Facebook. But Netflix isn’t the only good entertainment while you’re on “staying-in-place”. Here’s what you’re missing:
Podcasts
Criminal
Why Listen
Don’t let the name fool you. It’s not your typical podcast about murder. In fact, you won’t even know you’re listening to a crime podcast. It’s expert storytelling at its finest. Plus the host, Phoebe Judge, has the best podcast voice of all time. I’ll hear no rebuttal.
Bonus Points
Every episode teaches you something new – but you won’t feel like you’re learning.
Best First Listen
Pick just about any episode. “Wolf 10” about the wolves of Yellowstone will prove my point, while “Call Russ Ewing “ takes a unique look at race in America.
Over My Dead Body: Tiger King
Why Listen
Couldn’t get enough of Tiger King on Netflix? Well this podcast came out months before it and offers another perspective. If you need a fix, this will absolutely give it to you.
Bonus Points
You get more details on how obsessed Joe was with Carol – and it will shock you as much as anything you saw on Netflix.
Best First Listen
You have to start with the first episode with this one. It opens at Joe’s wedding and you’ll be hooked again by the 2 minute mark.
Slow Burn: The Clinton Impeachment
Why Listen
Slate really outdid themselves with this one. I was very young during the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal. Even if you remember it well, the interviews and true journalism shown here is one-of-a-kind.
Bonus Points
The interview with Linda Tripp, who recently passed away, will blow you away.
Best First Listen
Episode 1: You dive right into Monica Lewinsky’s experience with federal prosecutors – a side of the story you rarely hear about.
Subscribe (You have to go through the feed to find season 2.
Keep It
Why Listen
Lots of podcasts talk about diversity – this one actually brings it. And proves why it’s important. From Crooked Media, it’s a refreshing (and funny) look at pop culture and politics.
Bonus Points
This podcast really has it all: Serious talks about race are mixed with outrageous Oscars trivia you can only find here.
Best First Listen
Can you beat Jane Fonda? Probably not. I’d start here. But if you’re a Schitt’s Creek fan (and who isn’t?), this is a good one. You’ll love Annie Murphy even more.
Put on one of these podcasts while you’re cooking, cleaning, finishing a puzzle…or just lounging. They won’t let you down.
Leslie Jordan
Who: Leslie Jordan is the short old gay man you’ve seen in a ton of shows. He comes into scenes with southern charm and quick one-liners.
What: His #PillowTalk videos literally show him laying down, shot at horrible angles and are ridiculous (in the best way).
Ina Garten
Who: If you don’t know Ina Garten, who exactly are you? She’s a gift to us all. In short: Ina lives in the Hamptons with her husband and spends her days cooking the most delicious meals (with ingredients you don’t have). They also take the time you used to not have.
What: Ina’s Instagram feed is like your grandma’s best recipe – except better. Her soothing voice is the cherry on top. She’s what we all wish we were in the kitchen. I mean just look at her feed.
Your Local News (Mine is the AJC)
Who: Your favorite local news station probably has an Instagram. Don’t get bogged down in long news stories or having to catch the news on TV. Follow them on Instagram for the biggest news stories you need to know.
What: Hopefully a blend of important coronavirus updates that influence your daily life with a mix of positive stories and other important non-virus related updates.
Walk
No, it’s not a new app. Take advantage of this time to get outside for long walks. Explore new parts of your neighborhood and get some extra exercise. We’re all eating more. Walk some of the calories off after dinner. The best part: It starts to feel like a routine, which is we all need at the moment.
